The Syriac Peshitta New Testament is vital for our understanding of the early text of the New Testament. The Gorgias editorial team collates in this volume two important dictionaries of this text. The first is based on the lexicon of Aegidius Gutbier (1617–1667), with the revisions made by Ebenezer Henderson (1784–1858). For each Syriac word, its Latin gloss is given along with samples of references from the text of the New Testament. The second is Syriac-English and was compiled by William Jennings (1847–1927). In addition to giving all words that appear in the Peshitta text, it also includes words that appear in non-Peshitta texts such as the minor catholic epistles (Philoxenian version) and Revelation (in both versions), as well as some words peculiar to the Old Syriac Gospels. Students of Syriac in general and of the Syriac New Testament in particular will find this compilation extremely useful.
Aegidius Gutbier (1617–1667) studied in Quedlinburg, Rostock, Königsberg, Leiden, Oxford and Paris. He taught oriental languages at a Hamburg High School, and established a printing press in his own house where he published his Syriac New Testament and this lexicon.
William Jennings (1847–1927) was himself a student of Syriac and wrote his dictionary as a learner for learners. His dictionary became a classic and remains the primary tool for students of the Syriac New Testament. Jennings also translated several Chinese texts and dramatized the book of Job and the Song of Songs.
