Selma Ekrem grew up among the progressive Ottoman Muslim elite. Ekrem benefited from having an unconventional mother, who did not insist on her daughter's veiling. The book covers the family's sojourns outside Istanbul when her father was governor in Jerusalem during the 1908 Young Turk revolution and then governor of the Greek Archipelago Islands, where the whole family was held captive when their island was taken by the Greeks during the Balkan Wars. Returning to Istanbul just as World War I broke out, Ekrem attended the American College for Girls. Frustrated at the restrictions of Turkish female life, Ekrem traveled to America and countered prevalent stereotypes by lecturing on Turkey. |

Ephraim is one of the figures from the Syriac-speaking Church whose name is well known in both East and West. The Asmar Illuminated Lectionary is a masterpiece of art. Malphono Asmar Koury was one of the most prominent Syriac scribes and artists of the twentieth century. He produced this magnum opus using traditional calligraphic techniques which passed from scribe to scribe for generations. The volume, printed on heavy, high-quality art paper and adorned with traditional Syriac art, contains the entire Peshitta Syriac lectionary. Each page is illuminated with decorative borders, and each lection begins with a special design. The front matter consists of paintings and an illuminated table of contents, while paintings of the life of Christ appear throughout the work. The volume contains the Syriac Peshitta text and a Garshuni version. It measures 12 x 17 in and weighs 18 lb.
