Pagoulatos explores the unknown sources of the eleventh-century Byzantine service of Christ the Bridegroom in the Dura-Europos Christian baptistry ritual (earliest known Iconophile service) dating the liturgical use of Christian images in the third century, not in the seventh-century, A.D. +A fitting contribution to Gorgias Liturgical Studies, Sebastian Brock’sHoly Spirit in the Syrian Baptismal Tradition is a sensitive and evocative treatment of an issue key to any liturgical tradition—that of the role of the Holy Spirit in worship. With a keen awareness of the tradition of Syrian Christianity, Brock begins his exploration with the concept and the role of the Holy Spirit in the Syriac Bible.Symbols of the Spirit, the sources used to glean this information, and how it ties in with the Eucharist and Pentecost, as well as baptism itself and the subsequent practice of anointing.Save $18.00

Deification in the Eastern Orthodox Tradition: A Biblical Perspective by Stephen Thomas
A popularly-written study of the biblical roots of the Eastern Orthodox Church’s mystical understanding of the knowledge of God. This unique study brings together the best of contemporary exegesis with the tradition of Eastern Christianity and illustrates the biblical roots of the Eastern Church's understanding of grace as the energy of God. The book presents, in lay terms, the shape for an Orthodox biblical theology for the 21st century and will be of interest to all Christians for whom the Bible is divine revelation and for whom tradition continues to be creative.

The Coming of the Impassible God: Tracing a Dilemma in Christian Theology by Joseph M. Hallman
This book describes the development of the Christian understanding of God from the second to the eighth century as witnessed by major theologians who gradually realized that the Incarnate Word made flesh was not the God of the philosophers. They helped construct the great dogmas of the Christological councils. Beginning with the Apologists and ending with Maximus Confessor, the theological tradition overcame the notion of impassible deity in favor of the humble God of Christian faith, the Word made flesh.

In this book Gerasimos Pagoulatos examines the previously unexplored sources of the eleventh-century A.D. Byzantine service of Christ the Bridegroom by locating its origins in the liturgical environment of third-century A.D. Christian Syria and Mesopotamia, and more especially in the baptistry of the Christian House at Dura-Europos, as well as in the texts of the Acts of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip and the Symposium by Methodius of Olympus.

More specifically, Pagoulatos analyzes the bridal initiation service (the earliest known Iconophile service) of the Dura-Europos Christian baptistery, focusing on the role that the images played in it. This aspect, which has been previously neglected by scholarship, proves crucial for the better understanding of this service. Pagoulatos argues that the Dura-Europos Christian House Baptistery hosted an initiation bridal service, in which the real presence of Christ was signified by His image depicted at the center of the room, and the initiates were emotionally united with Christ, who revealed Himself as a Good Shepherd and Bridegroom through contemplation of His image. This study that dates the use of images in Christian worship at least in the third and not in the sixth and seventh-centuries as scholarship has generally acknowledged, is the only attempt to reconsider the issue of the function of the Dura-Europos baptistery since the work of C.H. Kraeling, (The Excavations at Dura-Europos, 1967).

Gerasimos P. Pagoulatos teaches "Introduction to Hellenic Civilization" at the Hellenic Open University, Greece. He holds an M.A. in Late Antique and Byzantine History, Theology, and Art from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from Saint Louis University, USA.
