This presentation of several Eastern liturgies in English contains important information for the devotee of historic Christian liturgies. Originally written to inspire sympathy for their Eastern Christian compatriots among the membership of the Church of England, Howard’s study, already démodé as it was going to press, has become a touchstone for those seeking a sense of antique Christian liturgical practice. After providing a history of the “St. Thomas Christians,” the Orthodox Christians of India, up until the mid-nineteenth century, Howard presents English translations of six different anaphorae in use in Christendom: namely, those of St. James, St. Peter, The Twelve Apostles, Mar Dionysius Barsalibi, Mar Xystus, and Mar Evannis. Also included are the Ordo Communis, the order of the communion service which is essentially common to all of the traditions cited, the Gospels appointed for special occasions, seals and sedras. Despite its age, this resource still offers fruitful ground for those studying the relatively unchanging nature of the anaphorae.

George Broadley Howard was a clergyman in the Church of England and served as Assistant Chaplain in the Diocese of Madras.
