Sinope, a settlement along the Black Sea, was a Greek colony of Miletus important for its location at the Northeastern margins of the Greek 'empire' and its role as a trading hub between the Mediterranean, Scythia, and Persia. It was most famous as the capital of Mithradates Eupator's Pontic kingdom, which fell to Rome in 70 BC.
