The Measure of a Man is the biography of William Ambrose Shedd (1876-1918), written by Mary Lewis Shedd, the wife of his last years. W. A. Shedd was an American Protestant missionary who was born in Urmia, Iran. Upon the completion of his education at Princeton, he spent the rest of his life among the Assyrian Christians of northwestern Iran. In 1918, William Shedd died of cholera near Hamadan during the mass flight of Assyrian Christians and the remaining American missionaries from Urmia towards safety in British-occupied Iraq. This book not only gives insights into the life of this remarkable missionary, but also sheds light on the life of the Assyrian Christians during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
