George Ebedjesu Khayyath, Chaldean archbishop of Amid (Diyarbakir), in this volume explores the literary testimonies of writers in Syriac and Arabic from the Church of the East on the question of the primacy of the Roman pontiff. The notes contain a great number of source texts in Syriac and Arabic (which are translated in the text itself) along with several philological observations. Several chapters in appendices deal with the history of the Chaldean church and its use of Syriac. An index of names and subjects concludes the work. This study will be of interest to readers concerned with the interactions of the churches in the east, but also to students and scholars generally interested in the literature of the Church of the East.

Myth, Text, and History at Sparta

Three studies that offer close readings concerning the interaction of the source material on Spartan history with the unfolding of actual historical events. These contributions take the position that not only political, but also social, policies at Sparta, as well as the historical actors giving them shape, were intensely─and to an unusual degree─influenced by myth, tradition, and popular memory about the Laconian past.

The Problem of Evil

Who of us has not wondered why a God with absolute attributes causes or allows evil in the world? This most puzzling issue, known as the problem of evil, received significant attention from Ibn Sina. In the present work, Dr. Inati argues that Ibn Sina provides seven theses to justify God's causing or allowing the presence of evil, and that only the thesis which relies on God’s omnipotence as defined by Ibn Sina eliminates the problem of evil in his philosophy. The book is an original piece of work and the first comprehensive study of Ibn Sina's Theodicy, which helped shape later Islamic and Christian treatments of the subject and left significant marks on the thought of major medieval philosophers, including Ibn Rushd, Aquinas and Suarez.
