Martin (1840–1890), author of several significant works on the Bible and Syriac language and literature, here takes up a study that had recently also been investigated by Tixeront (available from Gorgias Press). Beginning with the letters of Paul and the Acts of the Apostles, Martin follows the course of Christianity into its becoming so important in Edessa. Naturally, the details of the Doctrine of Addai and their possible historical connections are explored. Throughout the work, Martin interacts thoroughly with the primary and secondary literature on the subject; the Syriac passages referred to are all given in translation, so non-specialists can easily benefit from the work, which will be of interest to all concerned with the history and literature of early Christianity.
