We have been so busy in our tracks preparing for upcoming conferences that it seems the Gorgias staff is in debate over which season it is! We’ve barely noticed the season change, given the strange and fluctuating NJ weather. The beautiful colors on the trees confirms that indeed we have passed from summer to autumn, though this weekend's early snowfall on the East Coast tell us that it just may be winter already. We are at the last stages of preparation for SBL in San Francisco and MESA in Washington, DC. If you are coming to either of these conferences, be sure to stop by the Gorgias exhibit for great deals. Perhaps the most momentous occasion for this year took place a few days ago when we uploaded our 10th-year anniversary catalog to the printer. We took special care in preparing this catalog as it marks a special step in our journey to distinguish between our new publications and our reprints. After much time and discussion, George and I have decided to create the G&C Kiraz imprint to include all our reprints as well as publications with our partners. To aid your browsing experience, we have prepared two separate catalogs: the Gorgias Press Catalog, which includes original publications, and the G&C Kiraz catalog, which encompasses all our reprints. But don’t fret, for this is as seamless a transition as ever; our website and online ordering services will remain the same. Be sure to check out the Gorgias Press 10th anniversary and the G&C Kiraz catalogs by following the links.

The same day we uploaded the catalogs, we also uploaded the first ever Syriac encyclopedia, The Gorgias Encyclopedic Dictionary of Syriac Heritage. We are very proud of this decade-long endeavor and cannot wait until the physical proofs arrive in our office. Let me update you on a few of the projects that we have in production at the moment:

First, we have Tom Ricks' Notables, Merchants, and Shaykhs of Southern Iran's Towns and Ports on the Persian Gulf: Politics and Trade in a Northwestern Indian Ocean Region, AD 1729-1789. Unlike the traditional 18th and early 19th century historical narratives, the present work focuses on the trade and politics of local merchants and port rulers as a way of understanding the continued stability of Persian, Arab, Armenian, Jewish and Indian communities during a period frequently described as one of "anarchy" and "piracy."

Next, we have Satoshi Toda's Vie de S. Macaire L'egyptien: Edition et traduction des textes copte et syriaque. The life of Saint Macarius the Egyptian (c. 300-390) is transmitted in various languages of the Christian Orient. A study in its transmission and the re-edition of its Coptic and Syriac versions constitute the main body of this book.

Finally, we have Naomi Koltun-Fromm's Jewish-Christian Conversation in Fourth-Century Persian Mesopotamia: A Reconstructed Conversation. Was there an active Jewish-Christian polemic in fourth-century Persia? Aphrahat's Demonstrations, a fourth-century Adversus Judaeos text, clearly indicates that fourth-century Persian Christians were interested in the debate. Is there evidence of this polemic in the rabbinic literature? Despite the lack of a comparable Jewish or rabbinic Adversus Christianos literature, there is evidence, both from Aphrahat and the rabbis, that this polemic was not one sided.

Enthusiast of the Month: Joseph Kalariparampil

Joseph Kalariparampil

Joseph Kalariparampil was born to a Syro-Malankara Catholic family in India, and in December 2002, he was ordained a Malankara Catholic Priest for the diocese of Tiruvalla. From 2003 to 2007, following his sacerdotal ordination, he prepared catechism textbooks for the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. He also pursued his Master’s degree in Syriac Literature from St. Ephrem Ecumenical Research Institute in Kottayam, Kerala, India, in addition to serving as a parish priest. Since August 2009, Joseph has been pursuing his doctoral studies in Switzerland in the field of Syriac patrology. The theme of his current research is “The Theology of Eucharist according to Jacob of Serugh,” using selected homilies that he will translate from Syriac into English. In addition to Syriac, he has also studied German, French, and Arabic.

In its recent issue (vol. 80, p. 139), Orientalia published a review of Jerome Alan Lund's The Book of the Laws of the Countries: A Dialogue on Free Will versus Fate, A Key-Word-in-Context Concordance (Piscataway, NJ: Gorgias Press, 2007) by Craig E. Morrison of the Pontifical Biblical Institute who concludes:

"[This is] a fine example of early Syriac literature ... Like Lund's other concordances, this volume is very user-friendly ... Syriac scholars grateful to Lund for this concordance look forward to his future contributions."

Sobornost Incorporating Eastern Churches Reviews The Letters of John of Dalyatha

  Conference Report: Pappas Patristic Institute's Annual Fall Thematic Conference: "Family and Children in the Patristic Tradition," 13-15 October 2011, Brookline, MA

  Christina Geuther, GP's Reprints Acquisitions Editor & Conference Representative, shares the following report:

  This month I was fortunate to spend a few autumn days in New England at the Pappas Patristic Institute’s conference. There and around Boston, I met some of Gorgias Press' translators, fellow editors, university affiliates, and other scholars in the field. What a fantastic experience, and many thanks to Dr. Bruce Beck for coordinating the outstanding hospitality of Holy Cross. Many of the participants excitedly asked about the forthcoming Gorgias Encyclopedic Dictionary of the Syriac Heritage I gladly updated them that it’s officially in press!

  Conference exhibits give people a chance to preview or purchase titles at a discount. One of these titles didn’t get a chance to sit on the table more than ten minutes! That was Stephen Thomas’ Deification in the Eastern Orthodox Tradition: A Biblical Perspective from the Gorgias Eastern Christian Studies series. We sold out of Sebastian Brock’s Bride of Light. Other popular titles included Midrash and the Exegetical Mind, a collection of papers edited by Lieve Teugels and Rivka Ulmer; Paul Sands’ The Justification of Religious Faith in Soren Kierkegaard, John Henry Newman, and William James; Robert Murray’s Symbols of Church and Kingdom; and items from the Gorgias Handbooks series. I was told by some visitors at our booth that they already had several of our titles on exhibit. In fact, they also provided their recommendations to friends and colleagues. We appreciate those compliments very much and extend our thanks to our active readership that truly makes this press a community experience.

  November will be a busy month for conferences, and remember that upcoming Gorgias Press exhibitions are updated on our website. You may find George in San Francisco at the American Schools of Oriental Research as well as the joint conferences of the American Academy of Religion and Society of Biblical Literature.
