Morris C. Sutphen was a professor of Classics at Johns Hopkins University, and died in a boating accident the year of this article's publication. This, his last work, was published posthumously and for that reason shows his work in progress, though complete. In it he gives an extensive listing of Latin proverbs to supplement earlier works by German Classicists. Arranged alphabetically with citations for each, this provides a valuable collection for those with an interest in Latin proverbs and popular philosophy. Sutphen includes authors ranging from authors of the Roman republic to those writing well into the middle ages.
