Jacques Vosté (1883-1949) here gives a catalog of the Syriac manuscripts held at the Convent of Notre-Dame des Semences (not far from Alqosh), a brief history of which is given in the preface. Vosté spent 1926-27 studying the collection and this volume describing 330 manuscripts is the result. The descriptions are divided into the following subjects: Scripture, biblical commentaries, philosophy and theology, liturgy, canons, general history and hagiography, ascetic works, grammar, lexicography, and poetry, and, finally, miscellaneous works. Also included are a concordance with the earlier cataloging effort of Addai Scher, a list of manuscripts from before the 19th cent., an index of authors and anonymous works, an index of scribes, and an index of place names. This important work makes details of this collection known and accessible to Syriac scholars and readers interested in eastern Christianity.
