In this brief work, Larsow discusses the evidence for Syriac dialects, other than the well-known eastern and western varieties of Syriac that are commonly referred to and met with in Syriac literature. To do this he especially draws material from the lexica of Bar Ali and Bar Bahlul, compared with some material from Greek lexicographers. Naturally, another source in his investigations is Barhebraeus, who specifically mentions certain Syriac dialects in his grammatical works. This essay will be of interest to any student of the linguistic situation in the middle east during the medieval period, and especially to Syriac lexicographers.
