Legends about the discovery of the cross were quite popular in early Christianity, as evidenced by the different versions and recensions of the story that exist. Perhaps the most well known of these stories is that of the Emperor Constantine’s mother, Helena, finding the true cross. In the present work, Eberhard Nestle presents a study of the traditions of the true cross, particularly within the Syriac literature tradition. Nestle offers here an introduction to the topic and provides the Syriac text and German translation of several different versions of the story. Nestle also includes a very helpful survey of the sources and literature previously published that deal with the subject.
