The poems and hymns of Marka are an important piece of the early Samaritan liturgy, and they are a very important remnant of the stage of the Samaritan dialect of Aramaic. In the introduction to the present article, Paul Kahle discusses these important features of Marka’s writings. Following this introduction, Kahle published a German translation of twelve hymns of Marka that are part of the Samaritan liturgy. The Aramaic texts of the hymns are published in other works, but those works lack a modern translation. Thus, Kahle’s work here supplements the editions that provide the Aramaic texts. Kahle also includes an apparatus with critical notes regarding translation issues with both the Aramaic texts and Arabic translation of those texts.
