In this essay, originally published in the Bulletins de l'Académie royale de Belgique, T.J. Lamy, known for his editions of Ephrem and of Barhebraeus' Chronicon Ecclesiasticum, discusses the Chronography of east Syriac author Elias of Nisibis (975-1046), which is very important for its indication of sources used. Lamy places Elias' work in its proper context among other chronological works in Syriac with a brief survey. The last part of the study supplies both the Syriac text and French translation of extracts from the Chronography. Readers interested in Syriac and Arabic historiography will appreciate the reappearance of this work.
