James Rendel Harris was an eminent scholar of Biblical texts, best known for his discovery and editing of a great number of Syriac Biblical manuscripts. This piece uses known statistics of ancient autographs (that is, the original version of a written document) to posit the general appearance of the epistles. Using the average number of lines, spacing, and size of the pages he reconstructs the likely size, shape, and number of pages used to write the epistles and, by extension, other ancient letters such as those of Pliny the younger. The result is an enlightening new way of understanding the structure of the epistles as well as the conventions of other ancient letters, a topic of interest to students of the ancient world and the Bible.
