From a manuscript of the East India Office in London Hoffman here produces (in his handwriting) a collection of four East Syriac treatises on language and Bible. The first two deal with language, and the last two are commentaries of sorts. The first treatise is a text put together from Ananisho (7th cent.) and Hunayn ibn Ishaq (9th cent.) and deals with various different word forms. The second is a poem by a 16th cent. scholar named Abdisho on Syriac homonyms. The third treatise is an explanation of difficult words in the Bible, mostly from the Old Testament, but some from the Gospels as well, and the last is a collection of scholia by an unknown author (not earlier than the tenth century) and cites Theodore of Mopsuestia, Athanasius, Efrem, and Narsai. Hoffmann discusses each of the four works in his introduction. Readers interested in the native grammatical and lexical tradition and students of the history of biblical interpretation will find this volume of great relevance.
