The development of liturgical prayers in any tradition involves many and varied sources, and the Syriac traditions are no exception. In the present essay, Anton Baumstark publishes a Latin translation of nineteen prayers of the Eastern Syriac tradition found in Bedjan’s Chaldean Breviary and discusses the possible textual influences on these prayers from previous literature, including the Psalms, the Apostolic Constitutions, and various Syriac patristic authors. Baumstark’s translations of the hymns (qâlê) include critical notes with direct comparisons to the other pieces of literature that Baumstark discusses in the introduction.

Marriage and the Sacraments

Originally delivered as one of the St. Margaret’s Lectures for 1904, the contents of this booklet are focused on aspects of the Syriac-speaking Church. Extracted from Burkitt’s book Early Eastern Christianity, the fourth lecture concerns the development of marriage and the role of sacraments in the early Syriac Church. Burkitt finds that marriage was not early regarded as a sacrament and the married faithful were not permitted the sacraments of baptism or communion in the early tradition represented by Aphraates.
