Like many works in the genre of fable literature, the tale of Sindban and the seven wise masters is represented in several languages by a somewhat complicated textual history. There are versions in Arabic (two recensions), Syriac, Greek, Hebrew, Spanish, and Pahlavi. This volume is Baethgen’s dissertation from the University of Leipzig, in which he presents the Syriac text, based on the only manuscript of the work (from Berlin), along with a German translation and an introduction. The Syriac text has a small number of textual notes, while the translation is annotated with observations on the language of the Syriac text and its connections to the other versions of the tale.
