Professor Stanford J. Shaw (1930-2006) was one of the most active and prolific Ottoman historians of his time. Written over a period of more than forty years, the articles selected for this volume demonstrate the evolution of Shaw’s research interests, from landholding in Ottoman Egypt to Jews in the Turkish Republic. Common to all articles is that they are based on research drawing on a wide array of Ottoman sources, reflecting Shaw’s continuous efforts to make the use of Ottoman archives an imperative for research in the field. In this volume articles are presented by time period, beginning with a section on Classical Ottoman history. The most voluminous section of the book is part II, which discusses the Tanzimat period, the Ottoman reformers and population censuses. Part III traces the Empire’s transition to Republic through the Second World War with a particular interest in the position of the Jews. As a treat to his fellow scholars, in the last section Shaw presents articles highlighting the rich potential of Ottoman and Turkish archives as a source for researchers.
