Lastly a professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London, Professor Victor Louis Ménage has particularly contributed to Ottoman Studies through his work in the fields of etymology and Ottoman criminal law. This Festschrift in honour of Ménage’s seventy-fifth birthday in 1995 consists of articles contributed by a number of his friends, colleagues and students. From studies of the pharmacy lists of the Ottoman palace in the mid-16th century and of the life of the Ottoman kâtib to articles on the history of Fatih and “apocryphal” texts on early Ottoman history, the contributions to this volume shed light on a variety of topics within classical Ottoman history. The complete bibliography of Professor Ménage’s academic production from 1956 to 1991 is also given, including his numerous entries published in the Encyclopaedia of Islam. This rich volume contains articles written in English, French and Italian, and was edited by Colin Heywood and Colin Imber.
