Alevism is a much-debated branch of Islam due to its syncretic traditions and practices. This book, using methods of sociology of religion, studies the history, contemporary lives, and religious thoughts and practices of Alevis from the Tokat province in Turkey, where the Alevi-Bektashi population is densest and where the most active Alevi lodges in all of Anatolia are located. Using methods of participatory observation and interview techniques in remote villages, the author comes to understand Alevi-Bektashi socio-cultural life, traditional social organizations, customs, traditions, habits, and beliefs.
