Dr. John Hayes recently retired from the Department of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures at the University of California Berkeley. His interests include the linguistic history of the ancient and modern Middle East; the comparative history of the Semitic languages; Maltese; and Sumerian. His Manual of Sumerian Grammar and Texts is now in its third edition. He is also on the advisory board of Romance Philology.
